The nautilus grows by building a new, larger chamber and sealing the old one behind it; its shell is a record of every stage. Evolutio draws it in section, septa and siphuncle, the spiral tripling each turn, above a small sequence of becoming — unum, duo, multi, forma, vita. A faint tree of life grows in the margin. Growth is the shape of time.
